Volunteering with children: good intentions are not enough

Safeguarding, competence and continuity must come before the visitor’s experience.

Volunteers may offer useful skills, time and financial support. Yet caring for vulnerable children is not a travel experience. UNICEF Nepal warns that short-term orphanage volunteering can harm children by repeatedly disrupting relationships, and that weak screening creates safeguarding risks. Good intentions do not cancel these risks.

Moonlight Children’s Home is inviting enquiries from adult women worldwide. Its proposed participation contribution is €100 per month, with meals and accommodation included. That information is only a starting point. Anyone considering a placement should ask for written details of duties, the supervision arrangements, length of stay, safeguarding procedures and the legal conditions for volunteering in Nepal.

Suitable work might include approved behind-the-scenes activities such as organisational tasks, fundraising or specialist educational support under qualified oversight. No volunteer should assume an automatic right to photographs, a private friendship with a child, unsupervised contact or access to personal histories. References and appropriate background checks are essential parts of responsible recruitment.

If an organisation cannot explain how it protects children, say no. If your main goal is a brief holiday with emotionally intense childcare, consider supporting a reputable project financially instead. A genuinely helpful placement serves the children’s long-term interests and strengthens the permanent local team. It does not use children to enrich a visitor’s story.
